About us

Founded by Shihan David Hail as a formal school in 2000, Bujin-Ryu is a community of like minded martial artists who share a passion for weapons techniques.

Principally, Bujin-Ryu teaches Katana (Japanese Long Sword), Daisho (twin weapons) and Yari (spear) techniques, although we encourage students of other martial arts to demonstrate techniques that will enhance our knowledge and experience.

There are currently four senior instructors who take classes at Pontypridd.

The FIRST SESSION IS FREE, so why not come along and see for yourself?

What Do We Do

Our classes consist of Kata and Waza that compliment the art of drawing, cutting and resheathing that is Iaido.  We also participate in controlled sparring.

Iaijutsu is an integral aspect of Bujin-Ryu teachings, and our dojos are among the very few in world that still practise combat (using wooden bokken ). To that end, our experienced instructors are trained in aspects of Shinden-Ryu, Eishin-Ryu and Mugai-Ryu.

Bujin-Ryu is not only about teaching waza (techniques); we apply those waza to mock combat situations and experienced students of other Ryu may find that our classes are very different to those they are used to. However, our ethos of respect for other martial arts and Ryu ensures that we are not restricted to any particular form, believing that the road to perfection in the Samurai arts means embracing the best of all forms.

With this in mind, Bujin-Ryu would like to emphasize that we are not a school for traditionalists, we are are a school for those who want to pursue perfection through enjoyment, and relaxation in a controlled, professional environment.

The following week would see Bujin-Ryu demonstrate at The Museum of Welsh Life, Saint Fagans. It was our honour to receive His Excellency, Ambassador Masaki Orita, and we were grateful for his attention, interest and compliments.
